Ryne Sandberg for bench coach please.

Boot Lou, give Tram the interim job and bring up Ryno as bench coach. Do it yesterday.

I guarantee this will not happen this season unless "Lou decides to hang 'em up". They are not going to force Lou out. It's going to have to be a situation where the Cubs are definitively done and there's no reason for Lou to stick it out.

However, I think your arrangement of Trammel as the manager and Ryno as the bench coach is the most likely of many scenarios for next year though.

Ya think? In that scenario, Ryno has to wait out Trammel's tenure. If Tram gives it a pretty good ride, he'll stick. But in an interim capacity, it changes the equation. I'd like to think Ricketts and the GM would be taking a long view and if Lou is not gonna get an extension...then maybe it's gonna be time for a move...especially if at some point we aren't in win now mode. In that scenario...is Ryno ready to manage in the bigs now? At the beginning of next season? If not, how better to work it than to make Tram interim. Now, if you think Tram would manage with a one-year deal...then you're right. He could certainly do that and audition for other jobs.

I don't see Trammel and Sandberg ever being on the same staff.

Ryno isn't going to be pleased (right or wrong) with just a bench coach job with the big club, and Tram most likely wouldn't be content constantly looking over his shoulder at someone gunning for his job. They seem too similar to be able to share the same bench, and both would want to manage as their next long-term gigs. I could be wrong though, but don't think I am on this one.

I don't see the problem if everyone shoots straight. If Tram is explicitly "interim" or on a one year contract, then everyone knows where they stand. Sandberg knows he's being groomed. If being bench coach for his first assignment in the majors is the next step, well...he's a grownup. That won't be beyond his comprehension.

I just don't understand the notion that the Cubs are in a hurry to get Sandberg in there as the manager.
