Villeneauve is a really good choice for this.

Yeah, I've been following this for a while, and was very pleased when both Villanueve and Gosling signed on. I am officially aroused.

The original is my favourite movie of all time so I'm pretty excited about this.

If it's not film noir, it misses the point. It's hard to tell from the trailer.

The mood and style are basically the same though. Villeneuve doesn't do neo-noir, but I have faith in him. He's not just the director but also a big fan of the original. But yeah, it's possible it could still suck.

Well, the original is great because it's first rate noir. It's not about the dystopian sci-fi. That's the excuse. That's window dressing.

The original employed noir elements to enhance the story beyond some derivative sci-fi dystopian schlock. The noir aspects helped keep the story grounded, but the look and feel of the film are what make it really unique, in my opinion anyway. Scott kind of invented the cyberpunk movie genre.
