I loved it. My kids and wife loved it too. If you liked the LOTR movies, then you'll like this too. Same director, same writers, same actors, same locales, same look, same feel.
If you're on the fence, and the reviews are making you think twice, go see it. Especially if you're a fan of the LOTR series.

Excellent!!! Did they stay true to the book for the most part?
For the most part. The time spent traveling is down played, and there's some small inconsistencies with the book. There's two characters that they just kind of added, but they don't take away from the main focus of the movie at all. I haven't read the book in more than 15 years, but I thought it was pretty accurate.

I almost entirely agree with you. The only thing I'll add is it is quite a bit more light-hearted than LOTR, and rightfully so.

Wait? They didn't get to Beorn? How are they going to cram that, Murkwood spiders, the elves, Smaug, and the giant war in the 2nd?

HEY! How about a spoiler alert! The trailer was almost entirely the guy with the white beard reading a list of all the Hobbits' names. Is that the same as the movie? Just names of Hobbits?

They are making it into three movies now.

Yeah, the only negative things I'm hearing are related to the fact that it takes nearly three hours to cover the first 100 pages of the book, which is a bit much since The Hobbit isn't as deep of a story as the LOTR trilogy. Sounds like Jackson's really gonna drag this out over he next couple years. However, hardcore Tolkien fans won't mind.
After I heard it was going to be 3 movies, I was a bit worried that it was going to drag on. The first movie was fine for the most part. They expanded on Thorin's story line which was pretty cool. They also added in a side plot that was more of a subtle reference to LOTR in the book. Personally, I think it works quite well. I agree with Brock that they probably could have cut out the first half hour which was basically a tie in with LOTR.
