"Gordon Wittenmyer (Chicago Sun-Times Cubs beat writer) has confirmed that the Cubs have just acquired 3-time All-Star starting pitcher from the Angels in exchange for closer Carlos Marmol. Wow."

Sounds like sources on the Angels side are putting it out there too.

Interesting to see if they try to extend him. I suspect the answer is yes because we need starting pitching for the long term. If they don't extend him, no way he's not traded by July 31.

That's the nice thing about this move. He pitches well, either extend him or flip him. You have options. If he doesn't..eh.

It looks like to me that we are paying to try to get better prospects.
We take on his option and then hope he pitches well enough to trade at the deadline. A #2 SP would bring a much higher price at the deadline over a closer.
I like it.

His velocity has gone done over the past three seasons, but I don't see a reason why he couldn't succeed enough to garner deadline interest particularly because he's playing in the NL.

Let's not make it sound like Haren sucks now. In 2011, he was he was 16-10, 3.17 ERA, 1.024 WHIP.

Yep. Last year might have a lot do with his sore back. Some think the pain screwed up his mechanics.

He's 32 and this is his trend:

I'm excited that we got him. He's instantly the number 1 or 2 on the staff for next to nothing and all of the upside potential is spectacular. I'm just saying we shouldn't expect him to be instantly awesome.

Paul Sullivan@PWSullivan
According to @Ken_Rosenthal Marmol told Cubs he'd go to Angels, but trade leaked before it's done. Sounds like Dempster-Atlanta redux.

Please not again
